Chef and quantum physicist
A memorable contestant in BBC1's MasterChef, Aki is a quantum physicist who obtained a degree in Physics from the University of Cambridge in 2008, and a Masters in research in Controlled Quantum Dynamics from Imperial College London in 2010.
Aki is trained in and enjoys presenting science to a general audience. Her enthusiasm and expressiveness, both in front of large audiences and camera, along with her passion for cooking attracted attention during her appearance from episode 1 through to episode 9 in MasterChef UK Series 8.
Aki is from Tokyo and moved to the UK at the age of 8 with her family, who run a Japanese restaurant. She is fully bilingual, has family in Japan and has spent extensive periods of time there studying and working. She is now based in London, researching for her PhD thesis entitled "Laser Cooling of strontium-monofluoride" in the Centre for Cold Matter, Imperial College London.
