Dr George McGavin

Explorer, entomologist and zoologist

A renowned entomologist and passionate advocate of conservation, George was an academic zoologist for 30 years before becoming a television presenter. He is widely recognised throughout the UK as a regular contributor to BBC'The One Show, delighting viewers with his bug-life and ecology reports. George was part of the BBC's highly successful Lost Lands series and has presented many other television programmes including The Secret Life of Landfill: A Rubbish HistoryMonkey Planet and the multi award-winning documentary After Life: The Strange Science of Decay.  He is the author of numerous books and a highly respected speaker inspiring and educating audiences about insects, ecology, evolution, conservation and exploration.  His latest projects, an original audiobook All Creatures Small and Great available on all platforms now and his print book The Hidden World: How Insects Sustain Life on Earth Today and Will Shape Our Lives Tomorrow  is in book shops now.  

He recently toured the UK with his show It's a Wild Life: Tales from Television.

George was also the presenter and subject of A Year to Save My Life:  George McGavin and Melanoma on BBC4,  Nature's Turtle Nursery:Secrets from the Nest for BBC4, Oak Tree: Nature's Greatest Survivor for BBC4 and The Secret Life of Your House for ITV.  He also presented Dissected: The Incredible Human Hand and Foot for BBC4, co-presented Prehistoric Autopsy and he also fronted Miniature Britain for BBC 1 and Planet Ant: Life Inside the Colony for BBC4.

George was also a regular contributor to The One Show (BBC1) and  presented the Radio 4 programme The Etymology of Entomology .

Dr George McGavin is an Honorary Research Associate at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and a Research Associate of The Department of Zoology of Oxford University. He is also a Fellow of the Linnean Society, The Royal Geographical Society and an Honorary Fellow of The Society of Biology. His research has taken him from the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea to the caves of Thailand and from the jungles of Belize to the savannas of Tanzania. George studied Zoology at Edinburgh University before completing a doctorate at the British Museum of Natural History and Imperial College, London. 

George has several insect species named in his honour, all of which he hopes will survive him.
