Specialist in construction and property refurbishment
Rachel is a material scientist and an engineering graduate. She consults for a wide range of government and private sector clients on how they can make cost-savings during construction and building refurbishment projects and has recently worked with the Department of Health on a major estates project.
As the only girl studying Physics and Chemistry in her 6th form, Rachel knew she would always have to work a little bit harder than the boys in order to make her mark. Passing with exceptional grades, she was awarded an academic scholarship to study for a BEng in Textile Engineering at the University of Leeds where she specialised in medical and geo-textiles. Her dissertation was published in the university library (something almost unheard of for an undergraduate) and after graduating with a 1st, she was awarded a bursary to continue her research at the university. Rachel eventually moved into private research, initially developing medical textiles for the transplant market, and then progressing to developing specialist geo-textiles for the building industry.
Recently Rachel’s work has moved more specifically into building and civil engineering and looking at the future of our working spaces, and she is currently change manager for workspace rationalisation working on a nationwide project. Her interest in science and technology is still keen, and she is closely involved with the textile industry, and a member of the Textile Institute. Most recently she has been participating in a schools education programme, mentoring girls interested in studying science and engineering, and runs children’s science workshops in her spare time.
